About the Scholarship

We are proud to announce the establishment of a scholarship fund in memory of Britt Sommerfield.  We were approached by some of Britt’s Lakeland High School classmates about forming a scholarship in her memory. We have finished the legal paperwork and have starting funding it. The scholarship will be awarded to a graduate of Lakeland High School, who has been accepted to the University of Michigan. Everybody knows how much Britt loved Michigan. The guidelines for the recipient of the scholarship will follow what Britt did while she was in high school.

The following bio shows what Britt accomplished:

  • Britt graduated from Lakeland High School in 2000.
  • She had a 4.0 GPA and was a class valedictorian.
  • She was her class treasurer for four years.
  • She lettered in four sports: basketball, volleyball, track, and soccer.
  • She also participated in community service.
  • Britt graduated from the University of Michigan in 2004, where she received two degrees; one in Economics and the other in Communications.
  • She was a member of the Delta Gamma sorority, and the Pan-Hellenic council as a liaison with the Michigan Daily newspaper.
  • She helped run a community service project in Detroit called "Project Detroit", and other community serves endeavors, including going to Mott's Children Hospital.
  • She moved to Chicago where she worked for Performance Trust, a bond brokerage, and later became a trader for Magnetar Capital, a hedge fund.

She died December 29, 2008.

It is hoped that this scholarship will inspire many others to follow in her footsteps... down the road less traveled.

To date, we have given out $50,000 to 14 different deserving seniors at Lakeland High School over the past 8 years.
